 Before the rise of the Supermarket, came the original Farmers Market that brought all the townsfolk together. One of these markets, was Richmond’s 17th Farmers Market, a historical site today. With Virginia being primarily farmland in the colonial days, farmers markets were the center of shopping and a source to purchase/exchange fresh produce. With the James River being the hub for trade, Richmond served as a growing city and a center for farmers to bring their trade. The first Market House/Farmers Market was created in the city of Richmond shortly after these trading posts began to find popularity. You can visit the 17th Farmer’s Market today, attending their farmers market or others in the area below.
