Stemming from the family of cakes, with a long history originating from the Old Norse Viking term of “kaka”, cupcakes can first be found in 1796. The term “cupcake” came from the mold used to make them - small little pots/teacups when the ovens couldn’t bake a full cake without burning and small increments of measurements were used. Later evolving into the pan with small cup indentations, the cupcake became more widely familiar. In the last twenty years, the gourmet cupcake craze began to evolve offering a variety of flavors never seen before in a smite bite size manner.

Have you ever heard of the English Fairy Cake? It is similar to the american cupcake, but is smaller and only has a drizzle of powdered sugar or icing. In comparison with cupcakes, that have a thick texture, English Fairy Cakes are more sponge like and lighter.  Like the cupcake they are served at birthday parties and events.
