Before the rise of the Supermarket, came the original Farmers Market that brought all the townsfolk together. One of these markets, was Richmond’s 17th Farmers Market, a historical site today. With Virginia being primarily farmland in the colonial days, farmers markets were the center of shopping and a source to purchase/exchange fresh produce. With the James River being the hub for trade, Richmond served as a growing city and a center for farmers to bring their trade. The first Market House/Farmers Market was created in the city of Richmond shortly after these trading posts began to find popularity.
